In an effort to bolster safety measures at its recycling facility in Rhode Island, Glencore has introduced the ELOshield proximity detection system from ELOKON, Inc. The decision, announced on National Forklift Safety Day, reflects Glencore’s commitment to mitigating safety risks associated with forklift operations.
With 35 employees engaged in tasks such as shredding electronic materials and preparing samples for smelting and refining, Glencore’s facility faces inherent safety challenges. These challenges are exacerbated by the high volume of forklift traffic and the close proximity of pedestrians in a confined workspace.
By retrofitting all forklifts and personnel, including visitors, with the ELOshield system, Glencore aims to provide advanced warning capabilities, particularly in areas with limited visibility. The system utilizes 2-way ranging ultra-wideband (UWB) technology to alert operators when pedestrians, objects, or other vehicles are in close proximity.
One of the key features of the ELOshield system is its adjustable alert distances, allowing for customized safety zones tailored to the specific needs of the facility. This flexibility ensures comprehensive protection for everyone on site, enhancing overall safety standards.
National Forklift Safety Day, initiated by the Industrial Truck Association (ITA), serves as a platform to raise awareness about forklift safety and the importance of proper operator training. Glencore’s adoption of the ELOshield system aligns with the objectives of this annual event, demonstrating a proactive approach to reducing forklift-related accidents and injuries.
By embracing innovative safety technology and participating in industry-wide initiatives, Glencore reaffirms its commitment to prioritizing the well-being of its employees and visitors. The implementation of the ELOshield proximity detection system marks a significant step towards creating a safer work environment at Glencore’s recycling facility in Rhode Island.
