ABB has been awarded a contract by Samsung Heavy Industries Co., Ltd. to provide permanent magnet shaft generators for 15 liquefied natural gas (LNG) carriers.
The vessels, each with a capacity of 174,000 cubic meters, are set to be delivered between mid-2026 and August 2028 to support QatarEnergy’s supply chain. This deal represents Samsung Heavy Industries’ largest LNG carrier order to date and ABB’s most significant project involving its generator systems. The permanent magnet shaft generator technology enhances fuel efficiency by effectively converting marine engine power into electrical energy.
ABB reports that this technology outperforms traditional auxiliary engines and can reduce fuel costs by up to 4%. Additionally, when combined with ABB’s ACS880 Converter and Control System, it can achieve a further 1% increase in efficiency.
This substantial order highlights a growing recognition among key LNG stakeholders of the advantages of permanent magnet shaft generator systems, which are already well-regarded in the container ship, oil tanker, and bulk carrier sectors.
