The Ogun State Police Command confirmed the death of Nwachukwu Ikechukwu, who reportedly inhaled generator fumes at his home in the Shogoye area of Owode-Egba, Obafemi-Owode Local Government Area. The incident occurred on Thursday night when Ikechukwu and his wife, Oyin Falodun, used a generator in their sitting room around 10 PM.
A neighbor, Oladayo Olasubomi, visited to drop off a daily contribution of N1,000 for Falodun and found the couple unconscious. Olasubomi raised the alarm, prompting other neighbors and the community chairman, Showunmi Sunday, to inform the Owode-Egba police division about the situation.
Police spokesperson SP Omolola Odutola reported that officers visited the scene and found no signs of foul play. Ikechukwu was pronounced dead, while his wife was rushed to a local hospital and later regained consciousness.
Falodun recounted that she had asked her husband if she could turn off the generator, which powered their bedroom fans, but he advised against it until they fell asleep. She believed the generator emitted dangerous fumes before it shut off due to a lack of fuel. Falodun later discovered that they had fallen from their bed, and her husband had struggled to escape before he collapsed.
Currently recovering at Ore Ofe Hospital in Owode-Egba, Falodun noted the devastating impact of the generator fumes. Meanwhile, Ikechukwu’s body has been taken to the General Hospital in Owode-Egba for autopsy.
