The Gaza Strip’s health ministry issued a stark warning on Sunday, stating that all electricity generators at its health facilities will cease functioning within 10 days due to severe shortages of oil, filters, and spare parts. The ministry emphasized that this looming power outage poses a serious threat to the lives of patients, particularly in critical departments such as intensive care units.
In a statement shared on Facebook, the ministry called on international and humanitarian organizations to urgently intervene and supply the necessary materials to keep the health system operational.
The crisis comes as Israel continues to block the entry of humanitarian aid into Gaza during its ongoing military campaign, exacerbating an already dire situation. Civilians in Gaza are suffering from a lack of basic necessities, including food and access to medical care, as the healthcare infrastructure is crumbling under the pressure of war. Hospitals and ambulances have reportedly been targeted in the violence.
According to Gaza’s health ministry, the Israeli offensive has claimed the lives of at least 41,431 people. The international response has intensified, with South Africa accusing Israel of genocide at the International Court of Justice, the UN’s highest judicial body.
Efforts by mediators to broker a ceasefire and negotiate a captive-exchange deal have so far failed to bring an end to the conflict, which has raged since October 2023. The violence has spurred a surge in global solidarity with Palestinians as Israeli forces continue their intense assault on the enclave.
