A fire at the Demerara Distillers Limited Power Plant resulted in the destruction of critical equipment, including one forklift, nine transformers, twenty-three drums of castor oil, and seven Caterpillar generators. Fortunately, a swift response from the Guyana Fire Service helped contain the blaze and prevent further damage.
According to an update from the Guyana Fire Service, an urgent alert was received at 16:43 hrs, prompting the dispatch of six firefighting units to the scene. The first unit arrived just seven minutes later, at 16:50 hrs, equipped with 10,220 liters of water to combat the flames.
Chief Fire Officer Gregory Wickham led a dedicated team of six officers and twenty-two firefighters, who worked tirelessly to bring the situation under control. The fire reportedly started in the generator enclosure and spread to a nearby chemical bond, damaging parts of the wooden ceiling and metal guttering. Thanks to the rapid response, the chemical bond and fuel storage areas were safeguarded, mitigating the risk of a larger disaster.
Firefighters employed a combination of foam, dry chemicals, and water to extinguish the flames, utilizing five jets from different units. The quick and coordinated efforts of the firefighting team were crucial in limiting the fire to a single building.
Fire Prevention officials are currently investigating the cause of the incident to prevent future occurrences. The Fire Service has commended all personnel involved for their professionalism and commitment, emphasizing that their actions likely prevented a catastrophic event for Demerara Distillers Limited.
