The Uttar Pradesh government has extended its generator subsidy scheme for polluting industries in NCR districts for another five years, starting from October, as part of efforts to support the shift to cleaner fuels. This move aligns with the Commission for Air Quality Management’s (CAQM) winter action plan to curb pollution, according to a report by the Times of India (TOI).
The original five-year subsidy was introduced in 2019 to help industries transition to cleaner fuels, as the high costs of conversion had affected production levels. The extended scheme will provide continued financial assistance to encourage the use of environmentally friendly energy sources.
Sreenath Paswan, Deputy Commissioner of Industries in Ghaziabad, stated, “From October 1 this year, the scheme is being extended for another five years. Under this, a 50% subsidy or Rs 5 lakh (whichever is lower) will be given to micro and small-scale industrial units to purchase or retrofit generators that operate on cleaner fuels like LPG, natural gas, biogas, propane, and butane.”
The subsidy is structured into different categories based on generator costs. For generators priced between Rs 10 lakh and Rs 40 lakh, industries will receive a 40% subsidy or Rs 10 lakh, whichever is lower. For generators costing more than Rs 40 lakh, a 25% subsidy or up to Rs 20 lakh will be provided.
The move is especially significant for Ghaziabad, which has 296 industries relying on biofuels such as wood pellets, molasses, husk, and coal—fuels that contribute to poor air quality during the winter months. The extended subsidy is expected to encourage a shift away from these polluting sources, helping to improve air quality across the region.
