Super Modified Lawn Mower Racing Heads to Regional Victoria

by Anna

A unique sport is gaining popularity across Australia: super modified lawn mower racing. The Australian Ride or Lawn Mower Racing Association (AROLMRA) was founded in the small Victorian town of Harrietville and has been making waves at events like Summernats in Canberra, Melbourne’s MotorEX, and the Deni Ute Muster.

The AROLMRA continues to grow as it participates in more events nationwide. Its next race meet is scheduled for October 26 in Mia Mia, a charming country town located about 10 minutes south of Heathcote. Known for its stunning scenery, Mia Mia is an appealing destination for racing fans.

AROLMRA features four racing classes, from the Junior class with 110cc engines to A class machines that can reach up to 450cc. Riders modify their mowers to achieve the highest possible speeds while adhering to strict safety regulations. Top speeds recorded have reached an impressive 105 km/h.

Club President Di Millsteed highlights the community aspect of the sport. “The competitiveness and the fun are what keep the mower community together and growing,” she said. “We are an inclusive sport, catering to various skill levels. Seeing riders and support crews work together to ensure everyone gets a chance on the track is what has kept me here for 20 years. There’s nowhere else I’d rather be.”
