MITSUI E&S Co. Ltd. has been contracted to provide Tsuneishi Corp. with a VD4-250GH-OL high-pressure, high-flow hydrogen compressor for Japan’s pioneering offshore hydrogen station. The station, under construction by JPN H2YDRO Co. Ltd., is set to become the world’s first hydrogen refueling facility for ships, offering hydrogen fuel to vessels such as tugboats powered by hydrogen co-firing engines.
Scheduled for completion in January 2025, the offshore hydrogen station will feature advanced infrastructure, including systems for loading large quantities of hydrogen fuel, mooring equipment, and mechanisms to maintain ship stability during the fueling process.
The VD4-250GH-OL compressor, capable of compressing hydrogen to pressures of up to 50 MPa, will operate at a flow rate of 100 kg/h, ensuring a reliable supply of hydrogen to these specialized ships. This project represents a significant step forward in the maritime industry’s transition to cleaner, hydrogen-powered energy solutions.
