The Grindrod Water Treatment Plant in the Regional District of North Okanagan has successfully completed the installation of a standby power generator, significantly improving the reliability of the area’s water system.
Grindrod has long been prone to frequent power outages, which often caused depressurization of the local water distribution system. This issue resulted in multiple boil water notices issued by Interior Health. With the new generator in place, the water treatment plant will be able to maintain operations during power disruptions, ensuring a steady supply of safe water for residents.
The installation project also included crucial electrical upgrades to the plant, addressing the corrosion of infrastructure caused by high humidity levels within the building. The improvements to the plant’s electrical system are expected to reduce long-term maintenance costs while enhancing the overall resilience of the water supply.
“This project is a major step forward in enhancing the reliability and safety of our water systems,” said Allysa Hopkins, Director of RDNO Electoral Area F. “With frequent power outages in the area, this new system ensures that residents will no longer face Boil Water Notices during these unavoidable disruptions.”
The $460,000 project was fully funded through the Electoral Area F Community Works Fund, supported by the federal Canada Community-Building Fund.
