Astro Mechanica, an aerospace startup founded by Ian Brooke in 2021, is poised to revolutionize aviation with its groundbreaking turboelectric adaptable engine. By integrating the benefits of turbojets and turbofans, this innovative design offers unparalleled versatility for both subsonic and supersonic flight. Despite its modest size, with only eight employees, Astro Mechanica is leveraging advanced electric car motor technology to create engines that may redefine the future of flight.
The engine’s ingenuity lies in its configuration: a turbogenerator generates electricity to power independent electric motors, which drive both the compressor and the turbofan. This setup enables the engine to dynamically adjust air compression, optimizing performance across a range of flight conditions. On October 11, 2024, the company reached a critical milestone by successfully completing the first hot-fire test of its Gen3 engine at 30% power.
Traditional engines have struggled to balance efficiency at different speeds. Turbojets perform well at supersonic speeds but are notoriously fuel-hungry at lower speeds—a flaw exemplified by the Concorde, which consumed approximately two tons of fuel just to taxi. Meanwhile, turbofans excel at subsonic speeds but become inefficient due to drag at higher velocities. Astro Mechanica’s engine solves this dilemma with three distinct operational modes:
Mode 1: Electric motors spin a proprietary “blisk” (a bladed disk developed in-house), enabling fuel-free ground operations and efficient subsonic flight.
Mode 2: A turbojet combustion process takes over for supersonic flight, with electric motors maintaining optimal air intake by powering the compressor.
Mode 3: Operating in a fuel-only configuration similar to a ramjet, the engine exploits Ram Pressure to achieve speeds potentially exceeding Mach 3.
Astro Mechanica estimates that its engine could have extended the Concorde’s range by an impressive 61%, demonstrating its potential to address longstanding inefficiencies in aviation. The design’s versatility and fuel efficiency promise transformative applications for both commercial and military aircraft.
