Fiji Gas has launched a pioneering hydrogen dual-fuel generator at its Lautoka depot in a demonstration aimed at advancing the nation’s renewable energy efforts. The initiative, which is the first of its kind in the Pacific Islands, is a result of collaboration with Japan’s Obayashi Corporation and New Zealand’s Halcyon Power.
Abdul Ali, Operations Manager at Fiji Gas, described the demonstration as a significant milestone, highlighting that the hydrogen dual-fuel generator is now actively powering the Lautoka terminal. The use of this generator will result in cost savings on the company’s electricity bill, as it will help reduce reliance on conventional power sources during its operation.
“This project represents a significant step toward achieving Fiji’s goal of decarbonizing energy and reducing its dependence on fossil fuels,” Ali stated. “By incorporating hydrogen into our energy mix, we are contributing to Fiji’s renewable energy goals and reinforcing the country’s role as a leader in clean energy initiatives for small island developing states.”
Robakeibau Nayacalevu, Officer at the Ministry of Trade and Co-operatives, emphasized the importance of partnership in driving sustainable energy solutions. “This hydrogen dual-fuel generator showcases adaptability by maximizing existing energy infrastructure while significantly reducing reliance on fossil fuels,” Nayacalevu said. “It aligns perfectly with Fiji’s National Development Plan to reduce carbon emissions and move toward a greener future.”
The demonstration project is valued at approximately US$2 million and is a key part of Fiji’s broader strategy to embrace renewable energy sources and reduce its environmental impact.
This landmark project not only marks a significant achievement for Fiji Gas but also positions Fiji as a trailblazer in sustainable energy within the Pacific region.
