Slacteriet AS and MMC First Process Partner for Sustainable Refrigeration Upgrade

by Anna
Slacteriet AS has entered into an agreement with MMC First Process for the installation of an advanced energy management system at its Brekke and Florø facilities. This partnership will see MMC First Process responsible for providing and upgrading all refrigeration and freezer machinery with an environmentally friendly, future-oriented design.

The upgrade will include the installation of state-of-the-art freezing tunnels, freezing storage, and cold storage units. A key element of the modernization is the transition to CO2 as the refrigerant, replacing traditional alternatives. CO2 is a natural refrigerant known for its environmental benefits and is increasingly favored for its operational safety.

One of the main advantages of CO2 as a refrigerant is its capacity for heat recovery. The new energy management system will capture and repurpose heat for multiple uses, including heating tap water, defrosting, and building heating. This approach aligns with the industry’s growing focus on sustainability, enhancing energy efficiency while reducing environmental impact.

The project will involve the installation of a large-scale system, designed to support food production operations at Slacteriet AS’ Brekke and Florø locations. With a cooling capacity of 580 kW at a low temperature of -40°C and an additional cooling unit of 100 kW for medium temperatures of -7°C, the system will generate over 600 kW of heat recovery, optimizing energy consumption throughout the facilities.
