Hyosung Heavy Industries Corp. (HHI), a leading South Korean manufacturer of motors and generators under the Hyosung Group, announced on Friday that it has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Korea South-East Power Co. (KSEP) to collaborate on the promotion of hydrogen-powered electricity generation. The agreement was formalized at HHI’s facility in Changwon, located in South Gyeongsang Province.
The partnership aims to strengthen both companies’ competitiveness in the emerging hydrogen energy sector and explore business expansion opportunities in hydrogen power generation. The two firms will jointly pursue a range of initiatives, including the development of hydrogen and hydrogen compound combustion engine-based power generation projects, clean hydrogen production, and related technical cooperation.
Hyosung Heavy Industries has been actively involved in hydrogen engine development since 2022, and recently achieved a major milestone. In April 2024, the company launched a 1-megawatt (MW) hydrogen engine generator at Hyosung Chemical Corp.’s Yongyeon Plant 2 in Ulsan, South Gyeongsang Province, making it the first company in the world to commercialize a hydrogen combustion engine.
Hydrogen-powered generators utilize hydrogen as fuel to produce electricity, offering a clean energy solution with zero carbon emissions. Unlike renewable energy sources such as solar and wind, which are dependent on environmental conditions, hydrogen engines provide stable, reliable electricity, positioning them as a promising future energy source.
“Hydrogen power generation is the ideal energy solution for reducing carbon emissions and establishing a stable power grid as part of the transition to a carbon-free energy future,” said Woo Tae-hee, CEO of Hyosung Heavy Industries. “Leveraging our technological expertise, we are poised to lead the hydrogen power generation market and enhance our position in the eco-friendly energy sector.”
