Boat Owners Urged to Take Precautions Against Dehumidifier Fire Risks

by Anna

Boat owners are being warned about the fire risks associated with dehumidifiers, following a blaze at a Yacht Havens marina that severely damaged a Sadler 29 yacht. The fire was caused by a domestic compressor dehumidifier, which had been set up to drain into the bilge. The unit’s coils froze and overheated, leading to the blaze that destroyed much of the boat’s interior and affected its decking.

Yacht Havens has issued safety guidelines urging boaters to use desiccant dehumidifiers, which are safer for marine environments, and to regularly maintain and monitor their dehumidifiers. Many insurers require dehumidifiers to be rated for marine use as a condition of coverage.

Matt Elliott, Chief Engineer at Meaco, emphasized the importance of investing in high-quality, over-engineered appliances, especially for expensive yachts. He warned against using cheap dehumidifiers, often found online, due to their lack of fireproof casings and the risks associated with subpar components. Elliott also advised that even the best dehumidifiers require regular maintenance, such as cleaning filters, to prevent dirt buildup, which could fuel a fire.

Chris Michael, founder of Meaco, noted that compressor dehumidifiers typically have a defrost cycle to prevent freezing, but they can still malfunction if they lose refrigerant. He also cautioned against relying solely on CE-certified desiccant dehumidifiers, as they still need maintenance and attention to function safely.

The risk of fires can also be increased by rodents nesting inside dehumidifiers, which can chew through wires and insulation. Boat owners are advised to secure their dehumidifiers properly, with some models featuring tilt switches that automatically shut off if the unit falls over.

For boats in colder climates, desiccant dehumidifiers, which absorb moisture rather than using a cooling system, are recommended as they are less likely to freeze in low temperatures. Insurers also stress that boat owners should follow professional advice and use dehumidifiers designed for marine use to reduce fire risks.
