Eaton Canyon Tower Investigated as Possible Source of Altadena Fire

by Anna

Investigators are zeroing in on an electrical transmission tower in Eaton Canyon as the potential origin of the destructive Altadena fire, which has burned thousands of structures and caused fatalities. The fire, which scorched over 14,100 acres, began with flames near the base of a Southern California Edison tower before spreading rapidly due to intense winds.

Witnesses reported seeing the first flames around 6 p.m. on Tuesday, with residents capturing videos of the fire starting at the base of the tower. Marcus Errico, who was in his driveway when he first noticed the fire, quickly alerted his neighbors, while his wife captured footage of the flames. The fire intensified, fueled by 70 mph winds, forcing residents to evacuate.

Wayne Howerton, a California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection investigator, confirmed that the area around the electrical tower was a primary focus in the investigation. However, Southern California Edison officials have denied that their equipment caused the fire.
