JFK’s New Terminal One to Feature All-Electric Ground Support Fleet

by Anna

The New Terminal One at John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) has partnered with TCR, a global leader in ground support equipment (GSE), to introduce a groundbreaking all-electric fleet of GSE for the new terminal set to open in 2026. This will mark the first-ever centralized all-electric GSE fleet at any airport terminal globally.

In a major step toward environmental sustainability, this electric fleet will be shared by ground handlers—companies responsible for ramp services such as baggage handling and aircraft towing. Unlike traditional models where ground handlers own or lease their own equipment, the shared electric fleet aims to reduce environmental impact, optimize equipment usage, and lower operational costs.

The New Terminal One is a crucial component of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey’s $19 billion overhaul of JFK Airport. The transformation includes the construction of two new terminals, modernization of two existing terminals, a new ground transportation center, and a redesigned roadway system to streamline airport operations.

The electric GSE fleet is central to the New Terminal One’s sustainability strategy, supporting the Port Authority’s goal to reach net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. The innovative fleet pooling model will not only cut emissions but also reduce energy consumption and promote cost savings.

TCR CEO Kristof Philips expressed enthusiasm for the partnership, noting that the project exemplifies their commitment to sustainability and innovation, setting a new standard for the aviation industry. TCR is also expanding its presence in North America, creating approximately 50 local jobs, including roles for maintenance technicians dedicated to the electric GSE fleet.

The fleet will feature advanced fleet management technology that will provide real-time data, enhancing operational efficiency, safety, and decision-making. This technology is designed to revolutionize GSE operations, ensuring smoother and more reliable services.

The shared model for the electric GSE fleet offers several key benefits:

Reduced emissions: The all-electric fleet eliminates tailpipe emissions, improving air quality.

Cost efficiency: The shared fleet reduces redundant equipment, lowering costs for ground handlers.

Energy savings: The electric fleet helps minimize energy consumption.

By introducing this model, the New Terminal One aims to make it easier for ground handlers to participate in competitive bids, as they will only need to provide personnel to operate the GSE, without the need to purchase their own equipment. A request for proposals for ground handlers is expected soon.

TCR is also committed to supporting the Port Authority’s initiatives to include Minority- and Women-Owned Business Enterprises (MWBEs) by working with third-party providers for the equipment’s management and maintenance.

This collaboration marks a pivotal moment in the aviation industry, setting a new benchmark for sustainability and operational efficiency at one of the busiest airports in the world.
