FLIR Si2 Camera Detects Compressed Air Leaks in Mining Operations

by Anna

Air compressors are critical in underground mining, aiding in drilling, blasting, and various other processes. However, they can also be prone to leaks, which drive up energy costs and reduce operational efficiency. In fact, a typical compressed air system can lose 25–30% of its air due to leaks.

To address this issue, FLIR Systems has developed the FLIR Si2 acoustic imaging camera, designed specifically to detect compressed air leaks, partial discharges, and bearing issues in mining operations. Equipped with 124 low-noise MEMS microphones, the camera detects ultrasonic frequencies, enabling real-time visualisation of leaks for immediate analysis.

The FLIR Si2 is a user-friendly device that can be operated with one hand, allowing inspections to be completed up to 10 times faster than traditional methods. Its ability to detect leaks early helps mines improve energy efficiency, reduce operational expenses, and minimize environmental impact. The camera also supports condition-based maintenance, enabling safe, non-contact inspections from distances up to 200 meters, enhancing safety in high-voltage environments.

By quickly identifying and addressing compressed air leaks, the FLIR Si2 contributes to improved operational continuity, greater equipment performance, and reduced maintenance costs, ultimately leading to a safer and more cost-effective mining operation.
