Haldex Launches ApolloSDx Air Treatment System for Commercial Vehicles

by Anna

Haldex introduced its new ApolloSDx air treatment system for commercial vehicles on March 9 at the American Trucking Associations’ Technology and Maintenance Council annual meeting. The system will be available from distributors starting March 11, according to SAF-Holland, the company’s parent unit.

The ApolloSDx air treatment system is designed to remove contaminants such as water vapor, moisture, oil particles, and other impurities from the compressed air produced by a truck’s compressor before it reaches the air brake reservoirs. Moisture in the air system can severely affect brake performance, leading to frozen lines, increased downtime, and higher repair costs. Haldex emphasized that their air treatment systems also help to prevent rust-out, failed lines, or seals, which can be costly to repair.

Targeted Applications and Market Gap

The ApolloSDx is specifically targeted at commercial vehicle applications that are not considered severe-duty. These include over-the-road line-haul, dump trucks, roll-off trucks, rural refuse trucks, straight and service trucks, and agricultural vehicles.

Barry Williams, Senior Commercial Product Manager for Air Controls Americas, explained that the company identified a market gap for non-severe-duty applications. “What if it is not a line-haul application and not a severe-duty application? So, we went back to the drawing board,” Williams said. Previously, Haldex’s product range included the DRYest and PURest systems for line-haul trucks and the Gemini MDx for severe-duty applications. The Gemini MDx is also offered as a factory option by Mack Trucks.

Three-Step Process for Efficient Air Treatment

The ApolloSDx utilizes a three-step air treatment process. This includes:

Pre-treatment condenser and separator: removes 90% of oils, liquids, and solid contaminants.

Multi-stage desiccant cartridge: replaces the traditional single cartridge, using aluminum mesh and three stages of progressively smaller desiccants.

Air dryer: further filters the air to ensure optimal performance.

The system operates through an automatic drain valve that removes contaminants, ensuring the system remains free of debris and moisture.

Voltage Applications and Manufacturing Locations

The ApolloSDx is available in 12-volt and 24-volt configurations, making it suitable for a wide range of commercial vehicles. Haldex has manufacturing plants in Marion, N.C., and Monterrey, Mexico. Marion produces the DRYest air dryer, condenser/separators, automatic drain valves, and the Gemini MDx. Meanwhile, the Monterrey facility manufactures the PURest air dryers, automatic brake adjusters, actuators, anti-lock braking systems, and air disc brakes.

Tariff Concerns and Future Developments

While the new product is generating interest, Williams mentioned that tariff concerns are affecting production planning. “Customers are curious about how potential tariffs will impact Haldex production,” he said, noting that the company’s leadership is meeting regularly to assess the possible effects of tariffs and ensure continuity in manufacturing and delivery.

Conclusion

The launch of the ApolloSDx air treatment system by Haldex marks an important development in the commercial vehicle industry. By addressing the needs of non-severe-duty applications, the system promises to enhance air brake performance, reduce maintenance costs, and prevent common issues like moisture-related damage. With its advanced three-step filtration process and customizable options for various vehicle types, the ApolloSDx is set to become a vital tool for fleet operators seeking efficiency and reliability.

Haldex’s commitment to innovation and quality is evident in this new offering, which builds on the company’s extensive experience in air treatment systems. As the commercial vehicle market continues to evolve, Haldex’s proactive approach to addressing emerging needs and concerns, such as tariff impacts, positions it well for continued success.
