Wates Group Embraces Hydrogen for Carbon-Neutral Construction Power

by Anna

Wates Group has highlighted hydrogen as a key component in its strategy to reduce carbon emissions across its operations. The family-owned construction and property services company has been trialling a JCB 60kVA hydrogen combustion generator at a site near Wolverhampton. This trial is part of the company’s efforts to explore cleaner energy alternatives for construction sites.

Hydrogen-Powered Hybrid System

The JCB generator is paired with a 104kWh Powerpack battery storage unit, creating an intelligent power system. This system offers three operating modes: battery-only, hybrid (using both battery and generator), and hydrogen-only. This versatility allows Wates to adapt its power solution based on site requirements and available resources, reducing reliance on traditional, carbon-heavy diesel generators.

JCB’s Role in the Hydrogen Future

JCB, the supplier of the hydrogen-powered generator, is also focused on the future of clean power generation. Tim Burnhope, Group Director of Special Projects at JCB, highlighted the company’s role in developing hydrogen generators as a crucial part of the push for zero-carbon electricity. The hydrogen is delivered via tube trailers, allowing the generators to operate seamlessly by swapping out hydrogen tanks as needed.

This partnership and trial mark a significant step in Wates Group’s ambition to offer carbon-neutral power solutions to its customers, pushing the construction industry towards cleaner, more sustainable energy practices.
