Chinese automakers are increasingly incorporating petrol-powered generators, known as range extenders, into their electric vehicles (EVs) to improve driving range. This innovation was prominently featured at Auto Shanghai, where both BYD’s Yangwang U8 SUV and Chery’s Exeed ET were showcased, boasting the capability to exceed 1,000 kilometers using this technology.
Range extenders operate by powering the vehicle’s battery without driving the wheels, enabling the vehicles to remain fully electric while using petrol as a supplementary power source. This system helps mitigate range anxiety for drivers while maintaining an electric-only experience.
The popularity of extended-range electric vehicles (EREVs) surged in China last year, with more than one million units sold, accounting for 6% of the market share, according to McKinsey & Company.
EREVs are generating global interest as well. Stellantis has announced plans to release an EREV version of its Ram 1500 pickup in the United States, while Volkswagen introduced an EREV SUV at Auto Shanghai and is also developing an EREV Scout pickup.
Industry experts view EREVs as a transitional solution to address concerns over limited driving range while offering a reduced environmental impact when charged properly.
