In a significant stride towards sustainable metals production, Boston Metal has officially opened its first facility in Brazil, marking a crucial milestone for its Molten Oxide Electrolysis (MOE) technology platform. This deployment aims to recover high-value metals from mining waste, aligning with Boston Metal’s commitment to advancing green steel production by 2026.
The inauguration ceremony for Boston Metal do Brasil took place with distinguished guests, including the governor of the state of Minas Gerais, local authorities, and representatives from the company’s investor syndicate.
Tadeu Carneiro, CEO of Boston Metal, emphasized the symbolic progress made with this commercial deployment, stating, “This first commercial deployment represents a beacon of progress in advancing sustainable metals production. As proud as we are today, this is only the beginning. Our high-value metals business will expand rapidly and will support us as we scale our MOE platform to meet the growing global demand for green steel.”
In Brazil, Boston Metal’s MOE technology aims to empower mining companies to extract value from what was previously considered a liability. By implementing this innovative platform, which selectively extracts valuable metals from complex, low-concentration materials often treated as waste, the company contributes to a circular economy for the metals industry. This groundbreaking approach allows mining companies to mitigate financial and environmental liabilities associated with slag, a by-product of metal production, by turning it into a revenue stream.
Boston Metal’s commitment to Brazil doesn’t stop with this facility’s opening. The company is gearing up for the next phase of operations in the country, with plans to expand its local team from 80 to over 250 employees in the coming years.
Moreover, Boston Metal has received recognition from the U.S. Department of Energy, being selected to establish a chromium metal manufacturing plant in Weirton, West Virginia. This initiative aligns with the broader objective of onshoring the production of critical materials, essential for the aerospace, chemical processing, and nuclear industries. The move reflects Boston Metal’s dedication to driving innovation and sustainability in the metal manufacturing sector on a global scale.
