Bill Gates and his energy company, TerraPower, have commenced construction at their Wyoming site for a groundbreaking next-generation nuclear power plant. Gates believes this venture will “revolutionize” power generation and significantly impact America’s energy future.
The project involves the construction of an advanced nuclear reactor that utilizes sodium instead of water for cooling. TerraPower submitted an application to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) for a construction permit, aiming to operate the plant as a commercial nuclear power facility upon approval.
The chosen site, adjacent to PacifiCorp’s Naughton Power Plant, aligns with PacifiCorp’s plans to transition away from coal and natural gas towards carbon-free power sources. By leveraging nuclear energy, which emits no planet-warming greenhouse gases, PacifiCorp aims to enhance its sustainability efforts.
