Wedge Group Galvanizing Ltd has reached a significant milestone in its sustainability journey by completely eliminating chromium trioxide from its processes well ahead of the impending legislative deadline. The company, the largest hot-dip galvanizing organization in the UK, has invested heavily in research, development, and trials of alternative chemicals to achieve this milestone.
David Nobes, Technical Services Director at Wedge Group Galvanizing Ltd, emphasized the company’s proactive approach in adopting sustainable practices: “Over the past few years, we’ve focused on eliminating high-risk and non-sustainable chemicals from our galvanizing process. This effort not only enhances safety for our team but also ensures compliance with upcoming legislation and aligns with our sustainability goals and those of our customers.”
Chromium trioxide, traditionally used in passivation during galvanizing to create a protective and aesthetically pleasing surface, will be banned in most manufacturing processes across the EU starting September 2024 under the REACH legislation. Anticipating this change, Wedge Group Galvanizing Ltd ceased the use of chromium trioxide months ahead of schedule.
“Finding a viable alternative to chromium trioxide posed challenges, but we identified a non-chrome product that integrates seamlessly with our existing equipment and processes,” explained David. “Since 2020, we’ve conducted successful trials of this alternative at multiple plants, and by April this year, it was fully implemented across all 14 locations.”
Customer feedback has been overwhelmingly positive, with the majority noting no perceptible difference in the quality of the galvanized products. “We are committed to delivering consistent, high-quality finishes that meet regulatory standards and contribute to a sustainable future,” David affirmed.
