DMG Mori has introduced the third generation of its LASERTEC 30 SLM, a state-of-the-art additive manufacturing (AM) machine. This new model boasts a complete redesign to enhance robustness, repeatability, and thermal stability, targeting a wide market with its advanced features.
The LASERTEC 30 SLM 3rd Gen features a fully overlapping quad laser system and a build volume of 325 x 325 x 400 mm. It builds upon the strengths of its predecessors, integrating customer feedback to adapt to the dynamic AM market. One standout feature is its rigid cast structure, unusual in the AM field, which draws from the material and design principles used in DMG Mori’s milling and turning machines.
This rigid cast structure addresses thermal expansion, a common issue due to temperature changes during the AM process. DMG Mori’s extensive experience in mitigating and compensating for temperature variations is evident in this design. The process chamber is isolated within the machine, allowing for expansion and contraction, while the optics are mounted on the stable cast frame. The distance between the optics and the powder bed surface is maintained by calibrating the bi-directional recoater and compensating for Z-axis displacement.
To enhance efficiency and flexibility, the machine incorporates DMG Mori’s rePLUG unit. This automated powder processing unit can be exchanged with others to facilitate rapid material changeovers. This is crucial for industries like aerospace and medical, where maintaining top-quality powder is essential. The excess powder is processed in a closed loop under an inert gas atmosphere, minimizing oxidation, moisture build-up, and operator exposure.
A key innovation in this generation is the ability to exchange the build container while maintaining the inert gas atmosphere, eliminating the need to wait for the previous build to cool. This, along with camera-based monitoring of the powder bed surface and a new inert gas delivery system, reduces build cycle disruptions and ensures a consistent laminar flow over the powder bed. A secondary gas flow prevents residue accumulation on the protective glass, which is monitored by a second camera for any issues. Additional lighting aids the operator in checking and cleaning the glass between builds.
Usability and ergonomics have been prioritized, with an emphasis on reducing operator contact with the powder. The CELOS X digital ecosystem guides operators through job setup, including cleaning the safety glass and refilling powder, as well as performing daily checks and maintenance.
With these advanced features, the LASERTEC 30 SLM 3rd Gen sets a new standard in additive manufacturing, combining cutting-edge technology with practical design to meet the evolving needs of the industry.
