Electra Completes Successful Off-Runway Test Flights of Hybrid-Electric eSTOL Aircraft

by Anna

Electra has achieved a significant milestone with its EL-2 Goldfinch hybrid-electric short takeoff and landing (eSTOL) technology demonstrator, successfully conducting off-runway test flights from a grass field near its facility in Manassas, VA.

These test flights showcased the eSTOL aircraft’s ability to operate from minimally prepared fields shorter than 300 feet. The aircraft performed multiple takeoffs and landings, demonstrating a maximum performance climb-out angle of 32 degrees, which is crucial for various military missions. Notably, the eSTOL aircraft operates without the need for external charging infrastructure, as its batteries are charged in-flight through the hybrid propulsion system.

The dual-use eSTOL technology is designed to be a small, highly fuel-efficient airlifter, supporting Agile Combat Employment and expeditionary missions while minimizing the operational energy footprint. This aircraft could help reduce reliance on larger, high-performance fixed-wing and rotorcraft platforms in logistics scenarios, particularly in contested environments.

In addition to the operational tests, the campaign also included acoustic data collection to assess the aircraft’s noise levels. The eSTOL demonstrated quiet operations, producing sound levels of under 55 decibels at 500 feet—equivalent to a normal conversation. At typical cruise altitudes, the aircraft will be virtually inaudible against background noise. Future test flights will involve operations in even more challenging and confined environments.

Electra is progressing towards the production of the aircraft, which will be capable of carrying 9 passengers or 2,500 pounds of cargo over distances of up to 500 miles. The EL-2 Goldfinch will continue to offer STOL capabilities, austere operations, and low-noise performance. Certification and commercial entry under FAA Part 23 regulations are expected by 2028.
