A renowned manufacturer of figure skating blades, HD Sports, has significantly boosted its production capacity and growth following a comprehensive digital transformation initiative, aided by the globally acclaimed plating consultancy, Plating Solutions.
HD Sports, known for its prestigious John Wilson and MK Blades brands, caters to top-tier athletes, including Olympic and world champions. Based in Sheffield, England, the company has a rich history dating back to the 17th century as a Royal toolmaker. It produces blades from 1075 carbon steel, which are then coated in nickel for luster and chromium for corrosion resistance.
The company recently completed a six-year overhaul of its electroplating production, supported by Plating Solutions, now part of BEP Surface Technology, headquartered in Radcliffe. This transformation involved redesigning the plant, integrating automation, and enhancing the chemistry of metal plating processes.
The improvements have led to a 30% increase in production capacity, with an additional 13% scalability. The upgrades include enhanced safety standards, greater efficiency, and better product quality and consistency. Furthermore, operational costs have decreased, and profitability has risen.
HD Sports also invested in new power supplies, heating systems, and water processing methods, resulting in improved resource efficiency and significant cost savings. These advancements contribute to the company’s commitment to achieving net zero emissions.
Since the start of the transformation project, HD Sports has experienced a remarkable 135% growth, with a notable 33% increase in sales in China, its second-largest market after the USA. Sales in the UK have also surged, partly due to the popularity of the ITV show Dancing On Ice.

Plating Solutions, established 20 years ago by industry expert John Torr, specializes in metal finishing plant design and equipment consultancy. Torr continues to support HD Sports in refining its plating processes amidst rising global demand for figure skating blades.
With the 2025 ISU World Figure Skating Championships and the 2026 Winter Olympics approaching, HD Sports remains focused on further advancements to maintain its competitive edge.
