A powerful explosion ignited a fireball on a container ship loaded with hazardous materials at the Ningbo-Zhoushan Port, a major port on China’s Pacific coast, state media and authorities reported Friday.
Surveillance footage released by state broadcaster CCTV captured the dramatic incident, showing a massive burst of white smoke followed by an orange and yellow fireball. The explosion dispersed debris and engulfed containers stacked at least three high.
Fortunately, no injuries were reported from the explosion or the subsequent fire. The blast occurred on a container on the docked ship, according to CCTV.
An aerial photograph posted by the broadcaster depicted black smoke billowing from a stack of containers at one end of the ship and from an area on the dock. The rest of the ship and its containers remained undamaged.
The Zhejiang Province Emergency Management Administration confirmed the ship was carrying Class 5 hazardous materials, though specific details about the materials were not disclosed.
