In a groundbreaking move for heavy industry automation, an agricultural manufacturer has teamed up with Align Production Systems to deploy an Automated Guided Vehicle (AGV) system, significantly enhancing the assembly process for their newest tractor model. This collaboration demonstrates the feasibility of automating even the most demanding manufacturing tasks.
The agricultural manufacturer faced a formidable challenge: transporting a 28-foot tractor chassis weighing 110,000 pounds through various stages of assembly. Traditionally, this labor-intensive task consumed considerable time and manpower.
The innovative solution implemented was a wheeled transporter with AGV capabilities and self-charging functions. This system allows the tractor to move seamlessly along the assembly line, with the AGV autonomously returning to the start of the line.
Key design elements of the system include:
Dual Component AGV System: Featuring a tugger unit and a non-powered bogie unit, this design ensures the necessary support and maneuverability to transport the long, heavy tractor chassis through the assembly line.
Column Lifts and End of Line Lift: These lifts are integral for positioning the tractor on the AGV at both the start and end of the assembly line.
Safety and Automation: Advanced safety scanners are integrated into the AGV system to ensure reliable and secure operation, prioritizing worker safety.
The success of this project heavily relied on state-of-the-art simulation software for precise path planning. This technology allowed for the meticulous mapping of the AGV’s route within the assembly plant, ensuring smooth navigation through all facility areas. The agricultural manufacturer’s detailed input and planning were pivotal in developing a tailored solution that met their specific requirements.
Initial results from the AGV system’s implementation at the agricultural manufacturer’s site are promising, with full production slated to commence soon. The automation capabilities of the system are anticipated to enhance efficiency, significantly reducing both time and labor costs.
