Samsung Recalls Over 1.12 Million Electric Ranges After Reports of Fires and Injuries

by Anna

Samsung is recalling more than 1.12 million electric ranges due to fire hazards linked to unintended activation of the stovetops, following reports of 250 fires and numerous injuries.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced Thursday that these slide-in ranges feature front-mounted knobs that can be accidentally turned on if humans or pets bump into them. This defect poses a significant fire risk.

Since 2013, Samsung has received over 300 reports of unintentional knob activation, with 250 fires resulting from these incidents. Eighteen of these fires caused extensive property damage, and seven led to the deaths of pets, according to the CPSC. Additionally, about 40 injuries have been reported, including eight that required medical attention.

Consumers can check if their range is included in the recall by locating the model number on the product. Samsung and the CPSC have published a comprehensive list of affected models online.

The recalled ranges were sold between May 2013 and August 2024 through Samsung’s website and at major retailers such as Best Buy, Costco, Home Depot, and Lowe’s.

Owners of the recalled ranges are advised to contact Samsung Electronics America, based in New Jersey, to receive a free set of knob locks or covers compatible with their models. Meanwhile, the CPSC urges affected consumers to keep children and pets away from the knobs and to ensure the range is off before leaving the house or going to bed.

For general stovetop and oven safety, the CPSC advises never placing, leaving, or storing items on the range when not in use, as these items could ignite if the stovetop is accidentally turned on.
