Markforged Unveils FX10 Metal Kit: A Revolutionary Industrial 3D Printer for Metal and Composite Materials

by Anna

Markforged Holding Corporation has introduced the FX10 Metal Kit, a groundbreaking addition that transforms the FX10 into the world’s first industrial 3D printer capable of printing both metal filaments and composites with continuous fiber reinforcement.

The FX10, initially launched in November 2023 as a composite-only printer, is now enhanced with the new Metal Kit. This innovation allows the FX10 to handle metal printing, making it a versatile tool for manufacturers seeking to optimize their production capabilities.

Shai Terem, CEO of Markforged, emphasized the significance of this development: “With the FX10 Metal Kit, customers no longer need to choose between a metal or composite printer. Our years of research and field experience have culminated in an all-in-one solution that delivers immediate returns on investment once deployed on a factory floor. The FX10 not only boosts the efficiency of other equipment but also enhances overall productivity and minimizes potential disruptions.”

The FX10 Metal Kit includes a swappable print engine featuring a metal-specific print head, material feed tubes, routing back, and dual pre-extruders. This modular design allows users to switch between metal and composite printing in about 15 minutes, providing flexibility and continuous value from the machine.

In conjunction with the Metal Kit, Markforged has introduced a new 316L stainless steel metal filament, with support planned for 17-4PH and additional metal filaments in the future. This addition complements the FX10’s advanced composite printing capabilities, previously lauded for its speed and efficiency.

“The FX10 was designed with modularity in mind, enabling us to deliver new innovations and upgrades without requiring customers to invest in a new printer annually,” said Terem. “Combined with our regular software updates, the FX10 Metal Kit ensures ongoing value and adaptation to evolving manufacturing needs.”

The FX10 Metal Kit builds on Markforged’s extensive experience in metal printing. The 2nd Generation Metal FFF engine offers significantly faster print speeds compared to earlier systems and features a larger print volume, doubling the capacity of Markforged’s previous industrial metal printers. Metal prints are created using a combination of metal and ceramic release filaments, with post-processing involving washing and sintering in Markforged’s Wash-1 and Sinter-2 solutions. The Eiger software automates the entire process, including adjustments for shrinkage during sintering.

Markforged’s Digital Forge platform integrates with the FX10, providing users with comprehensive tools for managing their printing operations. This platform allows for seamless part sharing and fleet performance monitoring across manufacturing environments.

The FX10 Metal Kit will be showcased at the International Manufacturing Technology Show in Chicago, Illinois, from September 9-14 at booth 432305. Attendees will see demonstrations of the FX10 printing with both continuous fiber-reinforced composites and metal, highlighting its versatility and advanced capabilities.
