On September 26, National Manufacturing Day (NMD24) invites schools, colleges, and local communities to explore the heart of the UK’s manufacturing sector. Spearheaded by Made Smarter, this initiative aims to connect manufacturers with technology and skills through a series of events across the North West, North East, and Yorkshire and Humber.
This year marks the third iteration of the event, organized by the trade body Make UK. NMD24 offers a platform to elevate the profile of UK manufacturing, showcasing the advanced technology and processes behind some of the nation’s most beloved brands.
Businesses nationwide are opening their facilities to the public, providing a firsthand look at manufacturing operations and the latest innovations. With the sector grappling with high vacancy rates and a shrinking labor pool, NMD24 presents a prime opportunity to highlight diverse career paths in engineering, robotics, data analysis, and more.
Among the participants are companies supported by Made Smarter’s Adoption programme in the North West. Cumbria-based Playdale, known for its playground equipment, and Duo UK, a Greater Manchester packaging manufacturer, are set to welcome visitors.
Paul Mallinson, Technical & Operations Director at Playdale, expressed enthusiasm about participating, noting the chance to showcase their mission and the manufacturing career opportunities available. “We are excited to open our doors and show what goes into creating quality, innovative playground equipment,” Mallinson said.
Similarly, Duo UK’s Brand Director, Zoe Brimelow, highlighted their plans to offer local tours and a workshop on the importance of packaging, focusing on sustainability and the circular economy.
The Expanded Metal Company, a Hartlepool-based specialist in metal mesh solutions, will also provide factory tours, showcasing the recent implementation of a collaborative robot welder through the Made Smarter North East initiative.
Donna Edwards, Director for Made Smarter North West, praised the alignment of NMD24 with the programme’s goals of driving digital transformation and emphasizing STEM careers. “This is a fantastic chance to demonstrate the evolution from traditional manufacturing to the modern, smart factory,” Edwards said, encouraging more manufacturers to participate.
In addition to factory tours, Made Smarter Yorkshire and Humber will host workshops on data management and technological innovation. A special LinkedIn Live event will be broadcast at noon on September 26 to celebrate the programme’s nationwide impact.
Brian Holliday, Co-Chair of the Made Smarter Commission, will offer insights during a special ITN programme, “Manufacturing: Industry, Innovation and Impact,” highlighting the sector’s advancements and contributions.
Stephen Phipson, CEO of Make UK, emphasized the significance of National Manufacturing Day in celebrating Britain’s leading role in renewable technology and engineering. “We hope this day provides a window into the exciting opportunities within the manufacturing sector,” Phipson said.
This year’s National Manufacturing Day promises to be a landmark event, bridging the gap between industry and community, and showcasing the vibrant future of UK manufacturing.
