Massachusetts-based Nuvera Fuel Cells is preparing to showcase its inaugural operational ‘HydroCharge’ system, a hydrogen-powered AC generator set (genset) and DC fast charger designed for on-site power generation and electric vehicle (EV) charging.
Developed in partnership with Power Innovations International, a provider of power management services, the prototype unit will be demonstrated in California. It has undergone extensive validation testing at Nuvera’s facility in anticipation of a fully commercial version.
Nuvera claims the innovative system is versatile enough for deployment in various environments, including warehouses, parking lots, shopping malls, construction sites, mining locations, shipping ports, and airports. Additionally, it can serve as a backup power source for data centers, telecom facilities, and car rental centers.
The ‘HydroCharge’ system also addresses temporary power needs for rental fleets, concerts, festivals, sports events, movie productions, and urban construction projects. It offers a critical solution for interim power requirements, particularly in locations where grid availability is limited, making it suitable for both short-term and long-term rentals.
“Nuvera has developed a zero-emission solution to meet the increasing demand for clean, portable power sources,” stated Kedar Murthy, Nuvera’s Chief Commercial Officer.
He emphasized the urgency of this innovation, noting, “As grid limitations challenge the transition to clean energy and California Air Resources Board zero-emission generator mandates come into effect in 2028, the benefits of hydrogen fuel cell solutions are becoming more apparent.”
Murthy added, “We are eager to demonstrate that our hydrogen-electric generator can match the performance of traditional internal combustion engine gensets, providing a transportable, off-grid power source with refueling times comparable to diesel and gas-powered machines.”
