Star Micronics GB, a prominent name in sliding-head lathe technology, is set to hold its annual open house from November 19 to 21, 2024, at its Technology Centre in Derby, Derbyshire. The event will serve as the UK debut for the new SB-20RII sliding head lathe, alongside live demonstrations of cutting-edge production technologies from both Star and its partners.
Debut of the SB-20RII Sliding Head Lathe
Having garnered considerable attention at major industry exhibitions in Chicago (IMTS) and Stuttgart (AMB), the SB-20RII will officially be introduced to the UK market. This model belongs to Star’s best-selling series, with over 27,000 units sold worldwide, making it highly anticipated among manufacturers in the UK and Ireland.
The SB-20RII boasts numerous enhancements aimed at boosting performance, versatility, and user-friendliness. Notable features include additional tool stations, increased power, higher spindle speeds, and advanced control capabilities, all while maintaining a footprint that is 10% smaller than its predecessor, the SB-20R Type G. It can efficiently process components up to 25.4 mm in diameter.
Equipped with seven axes, the main spindle platen of the SB-20RII includes six turning tools, two fixed ER-16 spindles for cross-working, and three modular cross power-driven stations for various attachments. Its flexibility is further enhanced by the ability to operate in both guide bush and non-guide bush modes.
To optimize accuracy and stability while minimizing heat generation, the SB-20RII incorporates Star’s thermal displacement correction technology. The machine also features the innovative ECO mode and supports the latest advancements, such as the Step Cycle Pro chip-breaking technology, last part completion mode, eccentric machining cycle, and Easy Edit programming utility.
Highlighting the SK-51 Type A Fixed Headstock Lathe
Following a successful preview at last year’s open house, Star GB will once again feature the SK-51 Type A fixed headstock lathe. This slant-bed machine, capable of handling 2-inch bars, is equipped with twin 12-station turrets that provide 7.5 kW powered tools on each station. It offers main and sub-spindle speeds of 5,000 rpm and a 640 mm Z-axis stroke on both turrets.
The SK-51 features an advanced FANUC iHMI control system with a 15-inch touchscreen, allowing for conversational programming, free figure contour programming, and a fixed phrase insert function for easy programming. Toolpath simulation capabilities are also integrated into the control system.
Showcasing Versatile Manufacturing Solutions
In addition to the SB-20RII and SK-51 Type A, Star GB will present a range of its popular models, including:
SD-26 Type E: A new model designed for ⌀26 mm machining, featuring a programmable B1 head with eight tools and additional cartridge positions for various attachments.
SR-32JIII Type B: The latest in the SR series with a 32 mm capacity, offering improved rigidity, upgraded swarf clearance, refined ergonomics, and standard sub-spindle flush pump.
SP-23: A new one-inch machining model that emphasizes versatility and performance with an 8-station front turning platen and a 7-spindle cross-drilling inner tool post.
SB-16III: An upgraded version of the SB-16II, featuring the FANUC 0i-TF Plus CNC control system and enhanced tooling options.
SL-10: Known for its accuracy and efficiency, this ultra-compact model includes six turning tools and multiple cross-working positions for various tooling attachments.
Innovations in Chip Management with Step Cycle Pro
The open house will also feature Star’s Step Cycle Pro (SCP) technology, which effectively addresses the challenges of stringy swarf when machining difficult materials. The SCP system employs an ‘air-cut’ chip-breaking operation that synchronizes axis oscillation with spindle rotation, enhancing production efficiency by minimizing machine stoppages and prolonging tool life.
SCP offers a user-friendly interface on the FANUC CNC system, enabling engineers to select optimal programming conditions for their applications while maintaining productivity.
Advanced Barfeed Technology and Automation Solutions
Visitors will also see the latest in barfeed technology, including the FMB Turbo RS 3-38, which utilizes innovative RS technology to connect directly to the lathe spindle, improving stability for both long and short bar stock. The LNS QLS 65, available in various lengths, will also be on display.
Additionally, Star GB’s technical partners will showcase advancements in tooling, software, parts handling, high-pressure coolant systems, mist extraction, fire suppression, and more.
Expert Guidance and Future Planning
Star GB’s applications, service, and sales teams will be available to share their expertise, assisting both current and prospective users in identifying solutions tailored to their needs and maximizing their investment. Visitors are encouraged to discuss future investment strategies, technical specifications, and financing options to facilitate equipment upgrades.
Located adjacent to the Rolls-Royce factory on Raynesway, Star GB’s Technology Centre is easily accessible from the A52 and M1, with dedicated parking available. The event is open to all manufacturers in the UK and Ireland, running from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM each day from November 19 to 21, with refreshments and lunches provided for attendees.
