The Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant has successfully completed a cold run of one of its three diesel generators at Unit 1. According to Rosatom, the Russian contractor overseeing the project, the testing was conducted in two phases. Initially, the diesel generator was tested with compressed air to verify the functionality of all systems. This was followed by a phase where fuel was utilized to start the generator.
The diesel generators play a crucial role in the safety system of the nuclear power plant, providing standby power to essential equipment when the reactor must be shut down for any reason. Each unit measures 5.5 meters in height, 13 meters in length, weighs 185 tons, and has a rated electric power of 6.3 MW.
Alexey Deriy, Vice President for Projects in Bangladesh at Atomstroyexport, emphasized the importance of rigorous quality control and operational testing of all systems prior to commissioning. “This is a mandatory process,” he stated, reinforcing the commitment to safety and reliability.
The Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant, supported by Russian technical and financial assistance, will consist of two power units with a combined capacity of 2,400 MW. The project features Russian VVER-1200 reactors, an advanced Generation III+ design that meets all international safety standards. Rosatom’s Engineering Division serves as both the general designer and general contractor for this significant undertaking.
