Jaguar Land Rover to Invest £500m in Halewood for Electric Vehicle Production

by Anna

Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) has announced a £500 million investment to modernize its historic Halewood facility, supporting the production of electric vehicles (EVs) alongside combustion and hybrid models. The move coincides with UK National Manufacturing Day and reflects JLR’s ongoing push towards electrification.

Originally constructed in 1963 for the production of the Ford Anglia, the Halewood plant in Merseyside is undergoing significant upgrades to adapt to the demands of electric vehicle manufacturing. With £250 million already invested, the site has expanded by 32,364 square meters and has seen over one million hours of construction in the past year. The plant will produce medium-sized luxury electric SUVs on the new Electric Modular Architecture (EMA) platform.

State-of-the-art technology has been introduced, including advanced EV assembly lines, 750 autonomous robots, ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance Systems) calibration rigs, and laser alignment tools to ensure precision. Cloud-based digital management systems are also in place to oversee production, transforming Halewood into a cutting-edge “factory of the future.”

This investment aligns with JLR’s broader “Reimagine” strategy, which aims to electrify all of its brands by 2030 and reach carbon net-zero across the company’s supply chain, products, and operations by 2039. The Halewood facility will continue producing internal combustion engine (ICE), plug-in hybrid (PHEV), and battery electric vehicle (BEV) models side by side before eventually becoming JLR’s first fully electric production site.

“Halewood has been at the core of JLR’s operations in the Northwest of England for more than 20 years, building iconic models such as the Range Rover Evoque and Discovery Sport,” said Barbara Bergmeier, JLR’s executive director of industrial operations. “This transition to an all-electric facility showcases the extraordinary efforts of our teams and suppliers, who have equipped the plant with the necessary technology to deliver world-class luxury electric vehicles.”
