In the upcoming phase of this initiative, Northrop Grumman will focus on several key objectives:
Refining Design: The company will enhance the preliminary design of the GPI, which is intended to launch from the U.S. Navy’s Aegis Ballistic Missile Defense destroyers and Aegis Ashore systems using the standard Vertical Launch System.
System Performance Testing: Northrop Grumman will conduct tests to demonstrate the interceptor’s performance in hypersonic environments, prior to its Preliminary Design Review.
Accelerated Flight Experiments: The company plans to complete flight tests ahead of schedule by utilizing its proven flight systems.
Digital Engineering Integration: To expedite design processes and improve interceptor capabilities, Northrop Grumman will implement digital engineering practices that connect all aspects of the GPI program.
The GPI design incorporates cutting-edge technologies, including a seeker for accurate threat tracking and hit-to-kill precision, a re-ignitable upper stage engine for threat containment, and a dual engagement mode to address threats at varying altitudes.
In addition to its domestic efforts, Northrop Grumman will collaborate with the United States and the Japan Ministry of Defense under the GPI Cooperative Development program to deliver these interceptors to the MDA.
