A recent study conducted by Visual Components has revealed that employee upskilling is not a priority for 15% of manufacturers in the UK, with only 16% considering it their top concern.
Despite this lack of focus, a significant 45% of manufacturers anticipate that the ongoing labor shortage will substantially affect productivity and output in the next five years. Only a mere 3% of organizations believe that this shortfall will have no impact on their operations.
Furthermore, many manufacturers appear to be inadequately addressing this skills gap, particularly regarding the tools and technologies necessary for reskilling employees. The research indicates that 64% of manufacturers feel only somewhat equipped or not well-equipped to retrain their workforce. Similarly, 73% report being only somewhat ready or not prepared to adopt and implement new technologies aimed at enhancing factory floor efficiencies.
Mikko Urho, CEO of Visual Components, emphasized the urgency of prioritizing employee training. “It’s time for manufacturers to place training at the top of their priority list. Simulation software and robot offline programming (OLP) enable staff to upskill in factory floor processes and streamline operations by effectively deploying robots for repetitive tasks.
“With the right tools available, any staff member, regardless of their experience or skill level, can make a meaningful contribution,” he stated.
