The growing demand for whole home generators in places like Louisiana has started to put significant pressure on the natural gas infrastructure, particularly during major events like hurricanes when widespread power outages occur. These generators, which are often fueled by natural gas, provide essential power when the electric grid fails, but their increasing use is straining the existing gas supply systems.
During Hurricane Francine, the city of Thibodaux faced an overload of its natural gas infrastructure. As homes with whole home generators switched on simultaneously, the gas supply could not keep up with the demand, resulting in a lack of adequate gas pressure to power all the generators.
This incident highlights the challenge: when numerous homes rely on natural gas for backup power, the infrastructure can become overwhelmed, especially if it hasn’t been upgraded to handle the increased load.
Public Service Commissioner Mike Francis emphasized that enhancing the natural gas infrastructure is essential to meet the growing demand from both everyday use and emergency scenarios. However, improving the gas system requires financial investment, which will likely mean higher costs for consumers.
Francis explained, “In order to enhance our reliability in the infrastructure of gas lines and supply, we’re all going to have to pay — each one of us — a little bit to make sure that we build a reliable system.”
In recent years, utilities have focused on strengthening the electric grid to ensure reliability, especially in disaster-prone regions. Now, natural gas systems will need similar upgrades to avoid shortages during peak demand, particularly when whole home generators activate across multiple residences during emergencies.
With the rising popularity of natural gas-powered home generators, ensuring the robustness of the gas supply infrastructure will be critical in maintaining energy reliability in places like Louisiana, where hurricanes and other natural disasters frequently lead to widespread power outages.
