Nigeria’s Power Minister Highlights Costs of Private Electricity Generation

by Anna

Nigeria’s Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, has emphasized that using petrol or diesel generators for electricity is significantly more expensive than relying on the national grid. With rising fuel prices, generating one kilowatt-hour of electricity with petrol now costs up to N750, while diesel generators push this cost to around N950. In contrast, the tariff for Band A customers on the national grid is just N209 per kilowatt-hour.

Speaking in Lagos, Adelabu addressed public concerns regarding the Band A tariff, clarifying that it ultimately saves consumers money compared to self-generating power. He noted that in 2023, the power sector generated N1 trillion in revenue, whereas an astonishing N16.5 trillion was spent on fuel for private generators.

Adelabu urged consumers to support electricity distribution reforms, pointing out that many households are now less reliant on petrol or diesel due to improvements in power supply. He reaffirmed the government’s goal to increase power generation to 6,000 megawatts by year-end, despite challenges posed by frequent grid collapses.
