Tuscan company Real Italian Cars has introduced a revamped version of the classic Fiat 500, now featuring an electric motor and battery pack. This modern twist aims to make the iconic car faster and more practical while offering a quieter, more refined driving experience.
In addition to the standard model, Real Italian Cars will also electrify the Fiat Jolly, a unique variant of the 500 characterized by its open design and wicker seats.
Founded by three Fiat 500 enthusiasts, Real Italian Cars combines their expertise: Mattia, a rally driver, serves as Head of Italian Driving; Anthony, with a background in Formula 1, is Head of Italian Fun; and Amedeo, an artist, is Head of Italian Style. The team began their journey last year, restoring vintage Fiat 500s to a like-new condition, with prices starting under $20,000.
The company’s latest innovation involves installing electric motors into these classic vehicles, developed in collaboration with researchers from a prestigious European university, though details remain unclear. The motors are sourced from a reliable Japanese manufacturer and produce 42 horsepower—significantly more than the original gas engine, which delivers as little as 13 horsepower from its 479 cc two-cylinder.
The electric Fiat 500 accelerates from 0 to 50 mph in about six seconds and reaches a top speed of 68 mph. Weighing in at just under 500 kilograms (1,100 pounds), even with an additional 1,000 pounds of battery, the car remains remarkably light and agile, making it a compelling option for those seeking a classic driving experience with modern performance.
