Scout Motors, the Volkswagen Group spinoff, has unveiled its vision for electric vehicles (EVs) that blends rugged design with modern features, aiming to appeal to American consumers. The company introduced two models: the Scout Traveler SUV and the Scout Terra Truck, both of which will offer a unique variant equipped with a built-in gas-powered generator through a system called Harvester. This feature pays homage to the brand’s heritage, tracing back to the International Harvester Scout from the 1960s.
The inclusion of a gas-powered generator in these EVs echoes similar strategies seen in other automakers. For instance, Stellantis’ Ram brand launched the Ramcharger last year, a battery-electric truck featuring a 3.6-liter V6 engine paired with an onboard 130-kilowatt generator, targeting a combined range of 690 miles. This hybrid approach aims to alleviate concerns about EV range and charging infrastructure.
Scout’s EVs are not expected to hit the market until 2027, a shift from the initial plan for a 2026 launch. When production begins, the vehicles will feature a body-on-frame chassis, solid rear axle, and both front and rear mechanical lockers. The powertrain is designed to deliver an impressive 1,000 pound-feet of torque and achieve 0 to 60 mph in just 3.5 seconds in certain trims.
Scout’s strategy centers on resonating with buyers by offering tech-forward EVs that maintain off-road and on-road capabilities, alongside a sense of nostalgia. The interiors will combine traditional buttons and switches with a central touchscreen interface, reflecting a balance between modern technology and classic automotive elements.
During the reveal event, Scout Motors president and CEO Scott Keogh acknowledged the complexities facing the auto industry today, including labor tensions, EV transition uncertainties, geopolitical instability, inflation, and supply chain issues. He emphasized the importance of addressing these challenges as Scout Motors aims to carve out a niche in the competitive EV market.
Keogh expressed confidence that the new Scout EVs would navigate these hurdles successfully, positioning the brand as a compelling option for consumers looking for performance and reliability in an evolving automotive landscape.
