At the Red Hook Dive Center in the U.S. Virgin Islands, a groundbreaking solution to water scarcity has taken root. This community-focused initiative now features the Nube SS30 Atmospheric Water Generator, capable of producing an impressive eight gallons of drinking water daily from the moisture in the air. This innovative project is a collaboration with the Virgin Islands Conservation Society and aims to promote sustainability while addressing local water needs.
The Nube SS30, developed by Innovaqua Water Solutions, utilizes a sophisticated process to extract humidity from the atmosphere and convert it into potable water. By harnessing ambient moisture, this generator not only provides essential drinking water but also offers additional environmental benefits.
The installation of the water generator has led to unexpected advantages for the Red Hook Dive Center:
Temperature Control: The generator acts as a dehumidifier, helping to cool the storefront. According to Sam Darling, the center’s retail and marketing manager, this has resulted in lower electricity bills, as the need for air conditioning has decreased significantly.
Energy Efficiency: “We didn’t actually think this would happen, but it makes sense. Within the first week, we have not had to lower the air conditioning as much,” Darling noted. This reduction in energy consumption is particularly beneficial for businesses operating on the grid.
The V.I. Conservation Society introduced the Nube generator to the dive center after observing it during a summer trip to Tortola, where it was showcased by Green VI, an environmental organization from the British Virgin Islands. The Society is committed to reducing plastic waste by providing local schools with water filling stations and reusable bottles.
Adrienne King, program manager of the Virgin Islands Clean Coasts Initiative, explained their motivation: “As soon as Sienna [Gray, program director] and I got back, we started looking into it.” The Society’s initiative aims to support eco-friendly practices in local businesses, including providing funding to those that eliminate single-use plastics.
Prior to installing the Nube generator, the Red Hook Dive Center faced challenges with water accessibility. The dive center lacked an in-store water hookup and often relied on single-use plastic bottles. They applied for a grant from the conservation society to find a sustainable solution, as modifying their shared outdoor water hookup with nearby businesses proved unfeasible. The discovery of the Nube generator offered a perfect fit for their needs, meeting their criteria for sustainability without the complications of traditional water sources.
