AusNet has installed two new quick generator connection points in Emerald and Cockatoo to enhance preparedness for severe weather events. This initiative aims to improve the network’s resilience ahead of the summer season.
Andrew Linnie, AusNet’s Executive General Manager of Distribution, stated that these installations are part of the company’s efforts to prepare for increasingly frequent weather events, like those experienced in February and August-September of this year. “We’re doing more to prepare and looking at additional ways to support our communities during significant weather events,” he said.
Following the storms in February, AusNet held community feedback sessions to explore improvements in response to weather-related disruptions. Residents expressed concerns about accessing petrol and food during extended power outages. In response, AusNet decided to enable key services to maintain operations via mobile generators during outages.
The new quick generation points will facilitate faster connections for mobile generators, allowing for pre-storm deployment. In Emerald, the generator will support essential services such as the IGA, petrol station, SES, and medical centre. In Cockatoo, it will power the IGA, pharmacy, RSL, and Telstra exchange, helping maintain mobile phone communication.
“Our focus during severe weather outages will continue to be on restoring power safely and quickly,” Mr. Linnie added. “If successful, we plan to expand this concept to other communities within our network.”
