Kia made waves at the 2024 Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) Show in Las Vegas, unveiling two innovative, all-electric camping concepts: the EV9 ADVNTR and the PV5 WKNDR. These concepts highlight Kia’s vision for the future of electric lifestyle vehicles, blending cutting-edge technology with rugged design for a new generation of camper vans.
The buzz around Kia’s electric vehicles (EVs) was already building following the announcement of the upcoming PV5 concept van, set for launch in 2025. Combining the brand’s EV expertise with progressive design, the PV5 was expected to revolutionize the camper van market. At the SEMA Show, Kia presented two further concepts, giving a glimpse of how their flagship EV models, the EV9 and PV5, could transform into off-grid adventure vehicles.
EV9 ADVNTR: A Rugged, Adventure-Ready SUV
The first of the two concepts, the EV9 ADVNTR, is an all-electric version of Kia’s EV9 SUV. Known for its sleek, spacious design, the EV9 has already impressed with its comfort and performance. However, the ADVNTR variant takes things to the next level. The concept features a 3-inch raised suspension, off-road tires, and a new roof platform, perfect for car-top camping. These modifications, while stylish and functional, are simple enough that they could easily transition into production.
The ADVNTR concept was crafted by Kia Design Center America (KDCA) in Irvine, California, and reflects the growing trend of overlanding and car-top camping. With these upgrades, the EV9 ADVNTR offers a practical, electric alternative to traditional adventure vehicles, making it an ideal candidate for future electric off-roading enthusiasts.
PV5 WKNDR: A Modular Electric Camper Van
The second concept, the PV5 WKNDR, pushes the boundaries of what an electric camper van can be. Part of Kia’s Purpose Beyond Vehicles (PBV) line, which debuted earlier this year at CES 2024, the PV5 was originally designed for delivery and small business use. However, with the WKNDR concept, Kia demonstrates the flexibility of its PBV platform, offering a design that can easily be adapted for recreational use.
Described by KDCA as a “Swiss Army Knife on wheels,” the PV5 WKNDR comes equipped with a modular storage system called the “Gear Head,” designed to keep camping gear organized and easily accessible. The system includes a mobile pantry, kitchen, off-roading tools, and storage components that can be added or removed as needed, creating a highly customizable camper experience. Additionally, a built-in compressor can perform tasks such as inflating mattresses or adjusting tire pressures, making the WKNDR a versatile option for both camping and off-roading.
Self-Sufficient, Sustainable Camping
Both the EV9 ADVNTR and PV5 WKNDR are designed with sustainability and off-grid living in mind. Kia has already integrated Vehicle to Load (V2L) technology into its EVs, allowing owners to power appliances from the car’s battery pack. The WKNDR takes this a step further, incorporating onboard solar panels and conceptual “hydro turbine wheels” to store additional energy for recharging the vehicle’s batteries. These features ensure that the WKNDR can be a fully self-sufficient, eco-friendly solution for off-grid adventures.
Kia’s Chief Operating Officer and Executive Vice President for Kia America, Steven Center, shared his excitement at the SEMA Show, stating, “Our vehicles already help people live their active and adventurous lifestyles, and it was fun to see just how far we could go with these latest concepts. The SEMA Show acts as a blank canvas for creativity and offers a glimpse into what Kia’s automotive future may hold.”
Looking to the Future
With the debut of the EV9 ADVNTR and PV5 WKNDR, Kia continues to push the envelope in the electric vehicle market. As the company explores the potential of all-electric adventure and lifestyle vehicles, these concepts offer a glimpse into the future of sustainable, off-grid travel. Whether for weekend camping trips or off-road expeditions, Kia’s new electric concepts are set to inspire a new wave of eco-conscious explorers.
