Critical Generator Part Arrives at Hinkley Point C, Marking Major Milestone for Project

by Anna

A significant milestone in the development of the Hinkley Point C nuclear power plant was achieved on Sunday, November 17, with the arrival of a crucial generator part. The 12-meter-long, 450-tonne generator stator, which will be responsible for converting mechanical energy from the turbine into electricity, arrived safely at the construction site in Somerset. This stator, a key component of the power generation system, is expected to generate enough low-carbon electricity to supply power to approximately three million homes once the plant is operational.

The delivery of the stator marks an important step in the progress of the Hinkley Point C project, which is poised to play a significant role in the UK’s transition to low-carbon energy. The generator stator, which is the largest ever constructed by Arabelle Solutions, made its journey from the company’s manufacturing facility in Belfort, France. The part was transported using a combination of road, rail, and sea transport, demonstrating the complexity and scale of the logistical operations required for the project.

The arrival of the generator stator follows a series of important developments at the Hinkley Point C site in recent months. In October, the third and final liner ring was successfully installed at the second reactor building by the world’s largest crane, Big Carl. This steel ring, measuring 11.6 meters in height and 47 meters in diameter, is a critical structural element in the construction of the reactor. The installation of the liner ring completed the final stage of the reactor’s steel framework, which will now be encased in two layers of concrete to form the inner containment wall. This process will ensure the reactor’s structural integrity and safety, paving the way for further construction work on the facility.

The completion of these milestones represents a major achievement for the Hinkley Point C project, which is set to become one of the largest sources of low-carbon energy in the UK. Once both reactors are operational, the plant will provide reliable, clean electricity to millions of homes, helping to reduce the country’s carbon footprint and support its commitment to tackling climate change.

The Hinkley Point C project, which has been under construction since 2016, is expected to be completed in the coming years and will provide a significant boost to the UK’s energy security. The arrival of the generator stator is just one of many critical components that will help bring the plant online and provide sustainable, low-carbon energy for decades to come.
