The City Council unanimously approved plans for a 14-stall electric vehicle (EV) charging station at 29 Wildwood Avenue during a meeting on Monday night. The decision follows the Planning Commission’s conditional approval of the project at a special meeting on October 29.
The EV charging station, proposed by Shell Recharge, was originally submitted in November 2023. The Planning Commission recommended proceeding with the project, though it imposed several modifications, including a limitation on operating hours—from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m.—in response to concerns raised by nearby residents about a 24/7 operation.
At Monday’s meeting, some local residents reiterated their concerns, particularly about potential noise, increased traffic, and safety issues related to an unattended, round-the-clock facility. Shell’s representatives, however, argued that the charging station should be allowed to operate 24/7, emphasizing the need for equitable and accessible EV infrastructure. They noted that some drivers rely on the flexibility of overnight charging, especially in a city with limited public EV charging options.
Despite Shell’s request for extended hours, the City Council ultimately sided with the Planning Commission, citing the lack of clear demand for overnight charging and the proximity of other public charging stations within a few miles of the site.
Shell Recharge initially filed applications with the city in November 2023, seeking a conditional use permit, a non-residential sign design review permit, and a design review permit. The company also requested a variance from setback requirements in January 2024. If approved, the project will replace the longstanding gas station and auto repair shop at the site.
While most residents expressed general support for the EV charging station, many raised objections to the original 24/7 plan. Concerns centered on the potential for increased noise, traffic, and crime during late-night hours at an unmanned facility. The City Council’s approval of the modified hours aims to address these issues while still advancing the city’s push toward sustainable, accessible EV infrastructure.
