A leading UK veterinary referral centre has become one of the first in the country to adopt an on-site oxygen generation system, completely eliminating the need for external oxygen deliveries. This innovative move significantly reduces the hospital’s carbon footprint and enhances staff safety by removing the physical risks associated with handling heavy oxygen cylinders.
The veterinary centre, renowned as one of the world’s top specialist small animal hospitals, is dedicated to providing exceptional care to its patients. Oxygen, with a purity of at least 90 percent, is crucial for various treatments, including surgery, therapy, and patient care. On average, the centre requires around 33 cubic meters of high-purity oxygen daily.
Previously, the hospital relied on four deliveries of bottled oxygen each week to meet this demand. However, with approximately 150 lorry journeys made annually to supply the oxygen, the centre’s sustainability goals were compromised due to the significant carbon emissions associated with these deliveries. The installation of an on-site oxygen generator now ensures that the centre’s oxygen needs are met more efficiently and environmentally.
