Hamilton police have uncovered a network of tunnels and holes at Gage Park, revealing an intricate setup used by residents of the park’s encampments to access electricity. The discovery was made during a routine patrol of the area on Tuesday.
Officers found a hole nearly two meters deep and, upon further investigation, uncovered a series of tunnels that contained extension cords and other electrical wiring. According to a police statement released on Wednesday, these tunnels were being used to connect to a hidden generator.
The generator, which had been concealed in another hole, was reportedly linked to a nearby city light pole, drawing power to supply the encampment. Authorities described the setup as part of an unauthorized electrical network.
A man was arrested at the scene after a brief foot chase. He faces multiple charges, including mischief over $5,000, failure to comply with a probation order, and possession of fentanyl, methamphetamine, and hydromorphone with intent to traffic.
In response to the situation, police relocated the tents in the area for safety reasons, although it was unclear where the residents were moved to. CBC Hamilton reached out to authorities for clarification but had not received a response before publication.
The area will be fenced off until the city can address the damage caused by the tunnels and the hole, police confirmed.
This discovery comes amid the city’s ongoing efforts to expand its shelter system in a bid to reduce encampments in public spaces and provide more indoor options for the homeless, particularly as winter approaches.
