The Flint Fire Department is sounding the alarm over outdated, malfunctioning equipment as they await approval from the city council for more than $700,000 in funding to replace essential gear. The request, made in the fall, aims to replace critical self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) units and air compressors, but council action has been delayed due to internal leadership disputes.
Flint Fire Chief Theron Wiggins said many SCBA units, which firefighters rely on in hazardous conditions, are out of service, with some equipment 15 to 20 years old. “All of our equipment has an expiration date,” Wiggins explained, emphasizing the need for newer technology.
While the city’s Finance Committee approved the funding in October, the full council has yet to vote due to a deadlock over electing new leadership and filling a vacant council seat. Mayor Sheldon Neeley expressed frustration, urging residents to demand action from the council for the safety of first responders.
Council members, however, said they were unaware of the department’s urgent needs. Sixth Ward Councilwoman Tonya Burns emphasized that no council member would intentionally block life-saving equipment for firefighters.
Meanwhile, the Flint Police Department is also waiting on council approval for funds to outfit new patrol cars. Mayor Neeley called for the council to work together to resolve these issues and ensure the safety of Flint’s residents and first responders.
