Several hospitals in Aroostook County are operating on generator power following significant power outages Thursday, ensuring continued care for patients despite the disruption.
Northern Light AR Gould Hospital confirmed it remains open, relying on backup generators to meet patient needs. However, the hospital’s services have been affected due to the limitations of generator power and the ongoing nature of the outage.
Karen Gonya, Communications Manager for AR Gould, explained that while essential services remain in operation, some outpatient services have been impacted. “We encourage patients to check our Facebook page for real-time updates on specific closures,” she said, noting that Walk-In Care services at both the Caribou and Presque Isle locations will operate as usual until 8 p.m. The emergency department will continue to function 24 hours a day.
Cary Medical Center in Caribou also confirmed it is running on generator power but is still providing its full range of services. Bill Flagg, Community Relations and Development Coordinator, shared that the hospital’s cafeteria has seen an increase in visitors beyond patients, with local residents and families coming in for meals. “Our cafeteria was very busy today,” Flagg said.
In contrast, Houlton Regional Hospital and Northern Maine Medical Center in Fort Kent reported no significant disruptions to their services despite the ongoing power outages.
As the region faces continued electrical challenges, local hospitals are taking proactive measures to ensure the safety and well-being of their communities.
